Who Was Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, to poor cotton farmers. He grew up in a large family that was deeply religious and musical. He learned to play guitar and sing at a young age, and was influenced by the hymns, folk songs, and country music of the rural South.
Cash joined the Air Force in 1950 and served for four years in Germany, where he wrote some of his first songs. After his discharge, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and worked as a salesman and a radio announcer. He also formed a band with two friends, Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant, who became known as the Tennessee Two (later Three).
In 1954, Cash auditioned for Sam Phillips of Sun Records, who was impressed by his distinctive voice and original songs. Cash signed with Sun and soon became one of the leading figures of the rockabilly movement, along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Some of his early hits for Sun include \"Cry! Cry! Cry!\", \"Hey Porter\", \"Folsom Prison Blues\", and \"I Walk the Line\".
Cash married Vivian Liberto in 1954 and had four daughters with her: Rosanne, Kathy, Cindy, and Tara. However, their marriage was strained by Cash's frequent touring, drug abuse, and infidelity. Cash developed a close relationship with June Carter, a member of the famous Carter Family and a successful singer-songwriter in her own right. They began performing together in 1961 and fell in love.
In 1958, Cash left Sun and signed with Columbia Records, where he had more artistic freedom and control over his music. He expanded his musical range and explored themes such as social justice, patriotism, faith, and personal struggle. He also recorded concept albums based on historical events or locations, such as Ride This Train (1960), Blood, Sweat and Tears (1963), Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian (1964), and From Sea to Shining Sea (1968).
Cash's popularity reached new heights in the 1960s, as he appealed to both country and rock audiences. He hosted his own television show from 1969 to 1971, featuring guests such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and Louis Armstrong. He also performed at prisons across the country, inspired by his own experiences of being arrested several times for minor offenses. His live albums recorded at Folsom Prison (1968) and San Quentin (1969) were huge successes and contained some of his most memorable songs.
Cash divorced Liberto in 1966 and married Carter in 1968. They had one son together, John Carter Cash, born in 1970. They also recorded several duets that became classics, such as \"Jackson\", \"If I Were a Carpenter\", and \"It Ain't Me Babe\". They supported each other through their personal and professional challenges. ec8f644aee
