How to Install Mac OS Sierra on VMware
Mac OS Sierra is the thirteenth major release of macOS, Apple's desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. It was released on September 20, 2016, and introduced new features such as Siri integration, Universal Clipboard, Auto Unlock, and Apple Pay on the web. If you want to try out Mac OS Sierra without buying a new Mac, you can install it on a virtual machine (VM) using VMware, a software that allows you to run multiple operating systems on one computer.
In this article, we will show you how to install Mac OS Sierra on VMware step by step. Before you begin, you will need the following:
A Windows PC with at least 4 GB of RAM and 40 GB of free disk space.
VMware Workstation Player or Pro (version 12 or later).
A macOS restore image for Mac OS Sierra. You can download it from Apple's developer website.
A tool to extract the restore image from the dmg file. You can use 7-Zip or any other software that can handle dmg files.
A tool to create a bootable ISO file from the restore image. You can use PowerISO or any other software that can create ISO files.
Once you have all the required files and tools, follow these steps to install Mac OS Sierra on VMware:
Extract the restore image from the dmg file using 7-Zip or any other software that can handle dmg files. You should get a file named VZMacOSRestoreImage.hfs.
Create a bootable ISO file from the restore image using PowerISO or any other software that can create ISO files. You should name the ISO file macos-sierra.iso.
Open VMware Workstation Player or Pro and click on Create a New Virtual Machine.
Select Typical (recommended) and click Next.
Select I will install the operating system later and click Next.
Select Apple Mac OS X as the guest operating system and macOS 10.12 as the version. Click Next.
Name your virtual machine and choose a location to store it. Click Next.
Specify the disk capacity for your virtual machine. We recommend at least 40 GB. Select Store virtual disk as a single file and click Next.
Click Finish to create your virtual machine.
Right-click on your virtual machine and select Settings.
Click on CD/DVD (SATA) and select Use ISO image file. Browse to the location of your macos-sierra.iso file and click OK.
Click on Options and select General. Change the firmware type from BIOS to EFI and click OK.
Power on your virtual machine and wait for it to boot from the ISO file.
Select your language and click Continue.
Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
Select VMware Virtual SATA Hard Drive Media and click Erase.
Name your disk as Macintosh HD, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format, and click Erase.
Click Done and close Disk Utility.
Select Install macOS and click Continue.
Agree to the terms and conditions and select Macintosh HD as the destination disk. Click Install.
Wait for the installation to complete. Your virtual machine will restart several times during the process.
After the installation is finished, follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Mac OS Sierra virtual machine.
